Small Business Server 2003 Installation Guide Release Notes Ver 1.0
Note The information here is for installers who know the basic’s of setting up SBS 2003 & is not a complete guide for SBS 2003 installation.
These are not the only solutions to use though we have found them to be reliable and easy to implement.
Remote access
If you don’t have a static IP Address try using a TZO account. TZO Dynamic DNS Service allows you to use a name for your IP Address. http://www.tzo.com (about $2.00 per month) Free Trial
E.g. smallbusiness.tzo.com becomes your static IP address, you simply run their small utility on the server which checks your Dynamic IP address every 10 Minutes & updates your TZO account.
Note: can also be used with a static address.
Using SBS2003 as a mail server
If you have a Static IP, try the free service from DNS Park to look after your DNS issues http://www.dnspark.com They Also have many other services to offer.
Globally managed DNS hosting services are a requirement for your business in the economy today. There domain name services have been carefully constructed to provide highly reliable DNS services that are affordable.
If for security & other reason you want to use POP connectors
POPCON http://www.christensen-software.com/popcon.htm
This is a great utility compared to the default Pop connector with SBS. You can set the mail checking time less then the default 15 Min. Also have the ability to leave mail on the server& test & trigger mail from other PC’s on the network as well as Spam & Antivirus options.
Using Outlook 2003 over HTTP RPC
You will need to install a certificate in the 2003 Internet wizard use your TZO account name or your IP Address.
You will also need to allow access, as well as PORTS 443 & 4125. After you have done this you will need to install the certificate on the PC required to run outlook on HPPT.
Using Internet explorer open https://smallbusiness.tzo.com/exchange (Note the https)
This will then allow you to install the certificate use defaults
To check re-enter the address & you should go straight to remote outlook web access.
(Easy Setup) do the setup from the network connection first. Once connected you will need to enter your network password each time you connect. User name must be domain\user. If connecting from remote location, add mail account exchange server using
mail from within Control Panel.
For the server address use Server & Domain as in server.smallbusiness.local.
DON’T Check NAME Tab & complete the above settings.
So you need send mail to a domain email address that’s not attached to a server user
Email for information: support@logicalstep.net.au.
Enable Shadow Copies, right click on shared Data drive & under shadow copies enable shadow copies.
On the client PC’s you should now be able to right click on a file or folder that’s from your server & now has a Previous Versions Tab to which you can restore or save previous version of lost or modified files or folders.
Forward Emails through exchange
When Exchange is installed, the default configuration is to block any user defined rules that would forward their email to an external account. (They can still forward emails manually.)
Why might someone want to define a rule to forward to an external account? One reason is that if someone is out of the office forwarding emails to another account (such as on a blackberry) may be a convenient way of keeping in touch.
Why is this blocked by default? The reason often quoted is that it makes the system vulnerable to email looping. For example, if someone defines a rule that forwards all of their email to home, and then on their home system defines a system for forwarding all their email to work, then the system will be forever forwarding emails. Consider this carefully before allowing emails to be forwarded (by rule).
To enable forwarding by rule:
- Log on to the server running exchange server
- Run "Exchange System Manager"
- Expand "Global Settings"
- Click on "Internet Message Formats" to highlight it
- In the right hand window pane, double click on "Default" to open its properties
- On the "Advanced" tab, check "Allow automatic forward"
- Click [OK] to save
